Aleve

The pain reliever, Aleve, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).  It is used most often to relieve the pain of menstrual cramps, arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions that cause joint pain.  It also acts as a fever reducer and can reduce swelling.
The main ingredient is naproxen sodium.  Naproxen sodium is sold under the brand name of Aleve an many other brand names.  It was first sold over the counter for pain relief in 1994.  It is sold in tablet, coated tablet, and liquid form.  Aleve is different than other types of pain relievers in that you only have to take it every eight to twelve hours instead of every 4 hours.  People who take it in the extended release form only have to take it once a day to relieve pain.
Aleve is an effective chronic pain reliever which can have mild to serious side effects.  Some people experience stomach irritation when using it.  This pain reliever has been known to cause stomach ulcers, bleeding of the stomach and holes in the intestines.  People who have had ulcers before should not take Aleve.  Other less serious side effects are constipation, diarrhea, gas, drowsiness, light-headedness, dizziness, headache or ringing in the ears.  People who are taking anticoagulants, including aspirin, should not take Aleve.  Also, due to its high sodium content, people with high blood pressure should avoid taking this medication for pain.
