Common Knee Injuries? |
Broadly speaking, there are two basic types of knee injuries—Acute knee injuries and Overuse knee injuries. Acute knee injuries are those injuries which result as a consequence of sudden blows, accidents or twists of the knees, whereas, overuse knee injuries which are caused by gradual strain, overloading of the knee. One of the most common acute knee problems encountered is Torn ACL, also called Knee sprain, which often affects people who play sports. The ACL is a ligament in the knee, which is often torn due to overstretching or over-twisting. Torn cartilage (or torn meniscus) is another type of such injury, which involves the tearing of the meniscus, which works to absorb shocks in the thighs and the knees. A person might also fracture his knee, or rupture a tendon, which might sometimes require surgery. Overuse knee injuries includes conditions like Tendonitis, which involves over use of the patellar tendons thereby causing pain below the knee. Knee Bursitis is also a similar injury, which affects the bursa, which in turn contains fluids and is situated in front of the kneecap. Runner’s knee is another condition which involves feelings of instability in the knee, and mostly affects runners. Immediate treatment is required for most of the conditions. |
