Herniated disc is a vertebra made up a series of connected bones. The main functions of these vertebrae are they act like a strong connective tissue which hold one vertebra with the other and acts like a cushion. This disc is made up of two layers one is the outer layer called “annulus fibrous” and the other center called “nucleus pulposus”.
Herniations usually occur in the bottom of two discs of the lumbar spine. The pain usually occurs when the herniated disc press on the nerves in the spine.
Most of the herniated disc will improve through going for a surgery. But firstly the doctor usually try to treat the cause by non – surgical methods if it does not get treated then the surgical methods are carried out.
Non surgical treatment includes an anti-inflammatory medication which reduces the swelling, analgesic drugs are used to control the pain; other methods include physical exercise, epidural steroid injection therapy. The main goal of non surgical treatment is to reduce the irritation of the nerve and to improve the physical condition of the patient.
Analgesics are given to control the pain some of the analgesic are aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc, and even if you have a pain then the doctor will ask you to try for narcotics drugs for a short time. Surgical treatment includes complete disectomy or partial disectomy. |
